General Motors Co. said Thursday its all-new 2014 Chevrolet Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel achieves an Environmental Protection Agency-rated 46 miles per gallon on the highway, which is the best highway fuel economy of any non-hybrid car in the United States.
That's higher than GM said in February, when it announced the Cruze diesel would get 42 mpg on the highway. Chevy said testing was still under way at the time.
"We harnessed generations of diesel expertise to adapt our world-class global engine for the North American market," said Gary Altman, chief engineer of the Chevrolet Cruze diesel, in a statement. "The Cruze diesel is the best diesel passenger car out there. Chevrolet is redefining the meaning of great fuel economy with this car."
The Detroit automaker said the car, with a six-speed automatic transmission, can travel 700 highway miles on one tank of fuel.
The Cruze diesel will be available in some U.S. cities, such as Milwaukee and Baltimore identified as higher diesel penetration markets - in mid- to late June. The Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel will be available in showrooms nationally, including Detroit, and in Canada, by early fall.
The Cruze diesel starts at $25,695. GM calls it a "better value" than a Volkswagen Jetta TDI automatic with similar features.
The vehicle, built at GM's Lordstown Assembly Plant near Youngstown, Ohio, is GM's first diesel to be sold in the United States in more than 25 years. The company is looking to go head-to-head with the Jetta TDI.
Chevy expects about 10 percent of Cruze sales in the United States will be diesel versions.
Other automakers also are bringing diesels to the United States. Mazda Motor Corp. plans to bring a diesel Mazda6 this year, and Chrysler Group LLC will offer a 2014 diesel Jeep Grand Cherokee that will get 30 mpg highway.
GM said its Cruze diesel is much cleaner than past diesels, generating 90 percent less nitrogen oxide and other emissions.
Chevy has sold more than 2 million Cruze models globally since the compact's launch in mid 2010; more than 33,000 of those were diesels.

Decide on a Model

Before you visit the Chevrolet dealership, take the time to consider what type of vehicle is right for you. When you fully understand your transportation needs, you will be able to select the perfect vehicle for your daily drive.
Do Your Research
Once you have your vehicle selected, do some research on the options available for your Chevrolet model. Most Chevrolets are offered in several trim levels and can be equipped with a wide range of features, from entertainment and navigation systems, to enhanced audio and more. When you are at the dealership, the sales person will walk you through the options available for your model. By knowing ahead of time what your needs are, you will be confident when making the selections for your Chevy.
Consider Your Budget
Before you visit the dealership, it is important to know how you will finance your car, and what your purchasing budget is. Many first time car owners choose to finance their vehicle with a loan, so it is important to know how much you can spend on your monthly payments. When calculating your budget, be sure to include other expenses such as the cost of insurance and maintenance. By knowing ahead of time how much you can afford, you will be ready to make a deal once you head to the lot.
